2008 Annual Meeting Summary

More than 120 people, from 15 different countries, attended our 35th Annual Meeting, held at the Hotel Whitcomb, San Francisco, California.  Among the attendees were many students and young scientists.  The Society acknowledged the increased interest from students by awarding more student travel grants than we have in the recent past.  Student awards were made to Vanessa Bremer, Eduardo Kawakami, Aruna Wickramarathna, and Usha Rayirath.  Dr. Vanina Ziosi won the young scientist award.  Many industry members also participated and provided much appreciated meeting support.  Some conference goers participated in enjoyable tours of Alcatraz, and of the Scharffen Berger chocolate factory and the Rosenblum Cellars winery.

Having an exciting host city probably helped boost registrations, but it was the interesting, high-quality program which kept people at their seats with good attendance being the rule throughout the conference.  The PGRSA program committee, and especially the symposium chairs, Dr. Carol Lovatt, Dr. Franz Niederholzer, Dr. Peter Petracek, and Dr. Brian Whipker, deserve thanks for their hard work in helping to develop the program.

Now we are all looking forward to our next meeting, August 2-6, 2009, in Asheville, NC.  Dr. Brian Whipker, program chair, has already begun preparations and the program and tours look excellent.  I hope to see you there.
